PUNA AROHA PUNA KAI
WHAREKAI PROJECT

Purpose

Rebuild Puna Aroha Puna Kai

Scope of Works

Construction of a new Commercial Kitchen and Renovations to existing Dining Facility

Progress

Project commenced in July 2021.  The onslaught of COVID-19 Delta variant in August, followed by the Omicron variant, rendered extensive delay.  By December, the project was 5 months behind schedule.  Due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19 and prevailing uncertainty in the building industry, the builders experienced great difficulty procuring building materials and supplies which caused further delay.

Update as at 1 October 2023

Based on a revised timeline, this project (building) was completed in April 2023, with more work to do in and around the building, including ceiling damage due to severe weather conditions, kitchen still be fitted out with facilities, equipment, appliances, etc, as well as siteworks.  Projected date for full completion: March 2024.

NGĀ WHAREITI
ABLUTIONS PROJECT

Purpose

Construct a new purpose-built ablution facility.

Background

Existing toilet block was built in 1971, over 50 years ago.  Renovations to extend the block means cutting into the concrete structure, which would be inherently expensive and a short term option only. Infrastructural issues include no hot water due to electrical wiring issues and ongoing plumbing problems. Overall, the building is old and too small to accommodate whānau numbers returning to the marae for hui and other events, and an uphill distance from the wharekai and wharenui. It does not have an accessible ablution for wheelchair access, and does not comply with the building code. On this basis, the block has already been demolished in favour of a long term option, hence this project.

Scope of Works

Build new ablutions with the roof to be structurally connected to the rear of our newly restored dining facility.

Update as at 1 October 2023

Building is underway.  Projected date for full completion: June 2024.
