Marae Overview
Hiiona Marae is managed by the Trustees pursuant to the Charter, which was adopted in general meeting on 29 August 1999. Alterations to the Charter were subsequently approved and adopted at the Annual General Meeting on 8 September 2002.
The purposes and objects of Hiiona Marae are set out in Clause 5 of the Charter as follows:
5.1.1 To provide opportunities for beneficiaries and others to learn te reo me nga tikanga Māori, and whakapapa and history.
5.1.2 To promote and encourage the physical, intellectual, and spiritual wellbeing of all beneficiaries.
5.1.3 To support and assist in the educational, cultural, social and economic development of beneficiaries.
5.1.4 To ensure the marae is always a place of learning.
5.1.5 To ensure the marae is a place for meetings, social gatherings, cultural, recreational and sporting activities and events.
5.1.6 To give first priority to the use of the marae for tangihanga and hura kōwhatu.
5.1.7 To do all things as the trustees may deem necessary for achieving or promoting any objects or purposes herein specified.
